After exactly four years of subscribing to Birchbox, I have cancelled my subscription a couple weeks ago. I debated for months about whether or not I should cancel the subscription. I had been unhappy with my boxes for the last six months or so and finally decided to bite the bullet and cancel the subscription.
I don’t want this to become a, “I hate Birchbox,” post because I don’t hate Birchbox. I think they are an innovative company. I enjoyed most of my monthly boxes. It wasn’t until I started subscribing to Sephora Play I realized how much Birchbox was disappointing me.
Birchbox carries products from some awesome brands. However, there is no Birchbox store near me as the only actual storefront is in New York City. If you want anything from them you have to order it online. Based upon my Amazon order history I have no problem with online shopping. However, I like to smell and test out products before buying them especially if I haven’t tried a product before. With Birchbox only online, that is not an option.
Secondly, most of the sample sizes from Birchbox are so ridiculously small. There were so many foil packets of shampoo and conditioner that were good for traveling, but that was about it. I hate using foil packets in the shower because I always forget to open them before my hands get all wet and then I struggle with opening in the shower. The number of samples I received in foil packets frustrated me. Birchbox would send eye shadow samples that were tiny and impossible to actually use. They were my most hated sample and usually ended up in the trash right away.
Between Sephora Play and Birchbox, I would hands down recommend Sephora’s box. I am a Sephora junkie and prefer to be able to pick up a product right away in store if I love it. Both boxes are the same price, $10 per month. It simply came down to how unexcited I was when Birchbox arrived each month and was way more excited for the Sephora box.
If you subscribe to Birchbox and love it, you do you! This is simply my experience. Who knows, I could end up going back to a Birchbox subscription someday. Right now, I don’t regret canceling my subscription.
