Birchbox: July 2016

I received my July Birchbox a couple weeks back. Let’s jump into this.

Birchbox has monthly themed boxes. Usually, I do not go for the themed box because they seem hit or miss. This one seemed really good. The theme was ideal mornings and your morning routine.

Let’s start with the shampoo and conditioner packets in the back. I love trying new shampoos and conditioners in these little packets. Also great for traveling. I haven’t found a Living Proof product I don’t like. I can’t say for certain the Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner cut down on frizz, since this is only a one use packet, but it was a nice sample to receive.

Next, is the blue packet which is the Klorane Smoothing and Relaxing Patches. It is an under eye mask patch you leave on for 20 minutes and then peel off. I used them when my eyes felt tired and puffy. It was very soothing and relaxing.

I received a Milk Makeup Sunshine Oil sample. I still don’t fully understand what I’m supposed to do with this. The info card that came with the box said it is a rollerball that brightens, deeply hydrates, and gives skin a dewy glow. Am I supposed to role it on my face?! I don’t need a “dewy glow” during the summer. I have no dryness issues in the summer. Also, the smell isn’t my favorite.

My favorite sample is the Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream. I have sampled this before and I love it. I love the smell and I usually apply it to damp hair to cut down on frizz. My hair gets real frizzy during the summer so anything that will cut down on that is great.

The Dr. Brandt PoreDermabrasion is a gentle exfoliator. I have received this sample before and don’t mind getting more of them. My sensitive skin doesn’t react to it and it is a nice little scrub for my face.

Finally, the last sample I received it the Elizabeth Mott It’s So Big Volumizing Mascara. This mascara is great for separating my eyelashes. I have found I like to put a layer of this on before applying my current in use mascara, Stila’s Huge Lash. The Stila mascara has an almost fluffy brush that isn’t great at separating my lashes. This sample has been a nice first coat to initially coat my lashes.

Overall, this month was pretty good. I received a good mix of products and am happy with the products I received. Except for that weird rollerball face oil…

I have another subscription service review coming up and it’s an exciting one! Stay tuned!

Review: L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation has been out on the market for a couple years. I had read many reviews prior to taking the plunge. I finally got on the bandwagon and purchased it. I am so happy I did.

DSCN1236

It has a demi-matte finish, so it’s isn’t completely flat. The formula is great and feels light while still providing a medium to full coverage. I have more oily skin than dry skin, so I would rather go with a product that is more on the matte side.

This foundation has been a lifesaver this summer. I don’t have air conditioning in my house, so I feel my face can become an oil slick if it is hot in my house.

DSCN1240

It is up to 24 hour wear. I haven’t tested the 24 hour wear, but it does last all day without getting weird and separating. I began with the shade 102, but realized it was a bit too dark. I picked up a tube of shade 101 and have found mixing the two makes the perfect color for my skin tone. Since purchasing the Pro-Matte foundation about a month ago, I have not used anything else since.

If you are someone who has drier skin, L’Oreal has recently released their Pro Glow foundation. I have not tried it as my skin is too oily, but have heard great things about it.

If you’re in the market for a new foundation, take a look at L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte. It is really good. Have you tried it?

Essie Gel Couture

Essie nail polish has launched a new gel nail polish line – Gel Couture. I first saw this in July’s Ulta advertisement I received in the mail. Last weekend, I went to my usual Ulta looking for the new polish. My Ulta didn’t have the new line in. So, I then went to another Ulta and found the polish.

Essie is one of my favorite nail polish brands. I love the colors and the quality is fantastic. Last summer I was obsessed with a few Essie colors.

The bottle is different from the normal square Essie polish. These also have a different, in my opinion better, brush than their regular polish. This is a two step system and you apply the color first and then the top coat – the white bottle on the left. I picked up three colors first, but have since found the line at Target and picked up a light mint color. Target also had sets where you get the top coat and a color together in one package versus buying them all separately.

The red color is called Flashed. It is a brighter, more orange red. One could call it a poppy red. They also have a dark red in the line, but I liked this one more.

Next, the coral color is called On The List. I haven’t used this one yet, but was instantly drawn to the color.

Lastly, the lavender is Dress Call. I painted this on my nails first and it is by far my favorite color I picked up. I love this color on my finger nails.

I struggle with nail polish chipping within a day or two. I got a solid five days before any of the tips of my nails began wearing and slightly chipping. It would definitely last longer on someone who doesn’t struggle with nail polish chipping immediately. The Gel Couture line is supposed to last up to 14 days on your nails. I know for certain I will never get 14 days of wear out of my nails, but I can hope.

Have you seen the Essie Gel Couture yet? Have you tried it? If so, let me know. What are your favorite colors out of the range?

Bronzing Lotion

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve chatted with you. My apologies for that. I try to post regularly on a schedule, but sometimes life gets in the way unfortunately. Work has been busy and exciting this week which has left little time for much else. It’s finally the weekend and a long holiday weekend at that!

Since it is full on summer in Minnesota now, let’s talk about the sun and our skin. I have very fair skin which I have grown to love over the last few years. I used to think my skin was pasty white – which it still is, but I have embraced it and want to protect my skin from damage. One way I do that is to wear sunscreen regularly. I do like how my skin looks with a tan in the summer time, but want to have a safe tan.

I have dabbled in self tanner in the past, but haven’t really found one that I love. I have played around with bronzing lotions though and want to tell you about my favorite.

DSCN1207

I have talked about Soap & Glory products previously on The Spotted Poppy. Their Instant Sunkissed Tint Body Lotion is a lotion you rub on to give your skin a nice bronzed color. I don’t think it leaves a scent at all, which is what I like the most about this lotion. It doesn’t have the gross self tanner scent some of these types of products have. Once it dries, it also doesn’t rub off unless you wash it off with soap and water.

DSCN1220

The lotion itself kind of looks like poo if I’m being perfectly honest. Take a dollop and quickly rub it into your skin wherever you want to look a bit more bronzed than you actually are. The lotion can stain your hands, which is why I recommend working fast. Then, wash your hands immediately after. I found any staining on my fingers and palms will go away after a few hand washes.

This tinted lotion doesn’t leave you looking streaky if you apply an even layer. I use this the most on my legs when I wear skirts or shorts. Shaving your legs regularly will take off any tan you do have a lot faster, so I tend to use this on my legs the most.

I found this at Ulta about a month ago and have been testing it for the last few weeks. If you do try it, let me know how you like it. Do you have any self tanner recommendations or similar products to this?
